How to Install Oblivion Mods and NIF Files

"Oblivion" is the fourth title in the "Elder Scrolls" series. It's a fantasy role-playing game available for the PC and several gaming consoles, though only the PC version has incorporated the game's extensive modding features. Players can change almost every aspect of the game, from the storyline -- to the graphics -- to the underlying game mechanics. Because the developers designed "Oblivion" with modding in-mind, installing mods is a straightforward and integrated process. Mod packages include an assortment of game files, including .NIF files, which store the game's meshes.

Instructions

    • 1

Unzip the mod package. Packages come in a variety compressed formats, including .ZIP and .RAR. If you don't have a compatible unzipping program, download and install 7-Zip, jZip or WinRar. They can handle the full spectrum of compression formats.

    • 2

Open "My Computer" and navigate to your Oblivion directory. By default, it's located in \Program Files\Bethesda Software\Oblivion.

    • 3

Drag and drop the contents of the mod into the "Oblivion" directory or one of its sub-directories. The specific location varies from mod to mod, so check the mod's readme file to find out exactly where to put the contents. Typically, .NIF files go in the \Oblivion\Data\meshes directory.

    • 4

Start "Oblivion." Click on "Data Files." Check the box next to the mod you just installed. This activates it in the game.
