Marriage Problems in The Sims 3

"The Sims 3" gives players the opportunity to create their own Sim characters and control their everyday lives -- including their romantic relationships. Sims that fall in love are able to get married, regardless of gender. However, much like in real life, Sims can also develop marriage problems if they marry a Sim who is uncommitted, incompatible or has bad intentions from the start.
  1. Infidelity

    • Infidelity on the part of your Sims will have a negative effect on their marriage. If a married Sim is caught flirting or participating in romantic social interactions with another Sim other than his spouse, it will negatively impact the marriage. Likewise, if your Sim has children or other family members that catch him in the act of infidelity, he can damage his relationship to those Sims as well. Sims can carry out affairs in private without getting caught, however, if the secret relationship leads to a pregnancy, the cheating Sim will be caught.

    Incompatibility

    • Keeping with the realistic tone of the game, Sims are able to rush into a marriage before they know if they are compatible with their partner. Every Sim in the game has a number of personality traits, however, you are unable to find out which traits another Sim has until your Sim has gotten to know him or her better. This can lead to a 'Slob' Sim clashing with a 'Perfectionist' or a 'Good' Sim fighting with his 'Evil' spouse.

    Heart Breakers and Gold Diggers

    • Each adult Sim in "The Sims 3" has a Lifetime Wish, which is a goal the Sim would like to accomplish in his life. Some Lifetime Wishes lead to stress in the marriage. For example, a Sim with the "Heart Breaker" Lifetime Wish wants to break up with ten different Sims over the course of a lifetime, meaning a relationship with her is doomed to fail. A Sim with the "Gold Digger" Lifetime Wish wants to marry rich and see his spouse die first, which can take the marriage to a dark place.

    Resolving Marriage Problems

    • Sims with marriage problems have a few options to get their lives back on track. Sims will eventually recover from negative social interactions, no matter how bad they may be, however it will take a long time for your positive social interactions to undo the harm. Start by using the 'Apologize' social interaction to save some face and then slowly rekindle the relationship. If there are too many problems to solve, your Sims can always divorce by using the 'Break Up' social interaction. Click on a Sim's cellphone and choose 'Move' to kick the ex-spouse out of the house.
