Bejeweled Classic
The Bejeweled game board consists of a square filled with gems of different colors and shapes arranged in rows and columns. The objective is to swap adjacent gems in order to get three or more identical gems to line up vertically or horizontally. The gems disappear from the game board when lined up, causing the existing gems to fall down the game board while new gems are added to the top of the game board to fill all existing spaces. A group of five gems forms a hypercube, which removes all gems of the same color as any gem with which it is swapped.
Bejeweled Blitz
Bejeweled Blitz is a popular version of Bejeweled designed for social media and telephone platforms. Players have one minute in which to rack up as many points as possible by swapping gems. This version includes score multiplier and explosive hypercubes, which are formed by matching five gems, as well as star gems, which are formed by making four-way matchups of gems in a T-formation. Swapping two hypercubes results in an explosive shower of points on the game screen.
Social Gaming
Bejeweled Blitz leverages social networking platforms. Players are allowed to play with friends and form teams to enter weekly contests and compete for prizes. The scores of groups of friends accumulate into a team score, so weaker players can join up with their friends and win tournaments. Players can compare their scores and post comments on their friends' walls.
Timed Games, Puzzles and Zen
The variety of play modes has made Bejeweled one of the consistently most popular puzzle games. Players can race against the clock and win by scoring many points in a short time in the Action mode of the game. There is a Zen mode which offers players the option of "Endless play," where the aim is simply to match jewels in order to relax and rewind. There are several puzzles to be solved in Puzzle mode, where there is only one correct order in which gems can be matched in order to win the game.
