How to Beat Minesweeper on Expert

"Minesweeper" is a classic computer game available on all versions of Microsoft Windows. In "Minesweeper," players interact with a virtual minefield in an attempt to discover the locations of all the mines placed within. This is accomplished by clicking tiles in the field of play to reveal a blank space, a number or a mine. If a mine is chosen the game ends and the player must start over. Beating "Minesweeper" on expert mode can be done by utilizing several game play strategies and having a solid understanding of the rules behind the game.

Instructions

    • 1

Click random tiles on the field of play until the game reveals multiple tiles at once. This will give you a good starting point to approach the game. It is not uncommon to click a mine in this phase, as your reveal strategy is random. If a mine is revealed, start the game over.

    • 2

Locate an unrevealed corner tile that has a number "1" touching it. The numbers displayed denote how many mines are touching the numbered tile. Right-click the corner tile to place a flag on it. This tells the computer that you believe a mine is present at that tile and it should be avoided.

    • 3

Use deductive reasoning to figure out the placement of mines on the play field by taking advantage of the number clues provided by the game. If a tile has a number "2" touching it, and it has three tiles adjacent to it, but two of them have been flagged by you due to other number clues, it is safe to assume that the remaining tile has no mine and can be clicked.

    • 4

Take your time in deciding which tiles to click and which to flag. Rushing through a game of "Minesweeper" is a sure-fire way to make avoidable mistakes.

    • 5

Avoid tiles which leave no certain outcome when you have other choices. If one area has you stumped, approaching it from another direction can often lead to a solution.

    • 6

Prepare to make random clicking decisions as you approach the end-game. In many games of "Minesweeper," as you run out of tiles to click, it will be impossible to deduce with certainty which tiles contain mines. You will simply have to guess and hope for the best.
