How to Make Binds in CoD 4

"Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare," or "CoD 4," is a first-person shooter game that is available for PC and consoles. To use "Binds" is a way to show a specific phrase when you press the keyboard button that this phrase is "bound" to. These phrases are then visible to other players during a multiplayer match. The reason to make key binds is to communicate effectively during a battle without wasting time having to type out sentences. As binds require file editing, they are possible only on the PC version of the game.

Instructions

    • 1

Navigate to the folder where "CoD 4" is installed on your hard drive (the default location is C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare) and double-click the "Players" folder.

    • 2

Double-click to open the "Profiles" folder, and you will see folders with the different game profiles. Double-click the folder that matches the profile you use while playing the game. For example, if your profile for the game is "Player 1," double click the "Player 1" folder in the "Profiles" folder to open it.

    • 3

Right-click anywhere inside this folder, then select "New" then "Folder" and type "Backup." Right-click on the file "config_mp.cfg" and select "Copy." Right-click on the "Backup" folder and select "Paste." This creates a backup of the file that needs to be edited. If anything goes wrong, or if you want to stop using the binds, you just copy this backup file back into the directory in order to overwrite the modified one.

    • 4

Right-click the "config_mp.cfg" file (the one that is not inside the "Backup" folder) and select "Open." Click "Select Program from List of Installed Programs" and click "OK." Click the "Down" arrow next to "Other Programs" and then select "Wordpad" from the list. Windows recommends using "Notepad," but using it results in the file not having any formatting, so stick to Wordpad.

    • 5

Click next to the last line of text that start with the word "Bind" and press "Enter." This creates a blank line where you can now type in your own bind. Type the word "Bind" (without the quotations marks), then press the space bar.

    • 6

Type the name of the keyboard button you want to bind, for example "F7" (without the quotation marks) to bind the "F7" key at the top of the keyboard. Look through the other binds (the ones already in the file above where you are typing) to see that the key isn't already bound to another function.

    • 7

Type the text you want displayed when you press the key you specified. The word "Bind" plus key and text must all be on one line. To change the color of the text, use the command "^0" to"^9" (without the quotes) in front of the text. The "^" symbol is made by holding down the "Alt" key on your keyboard and pressing "9," then "4" on the numeric keypad. For example, to display the text "This is a CoD 4 Bind" in red when you press the "F1" key the command in full, will be: "Bind F1 ^1." This is a "Call of Duty 4" bind.

    • 8

Press "Enter" to start typing on a new line, then enter the next bind you want to create. Click "File" and "Save" to save your changes when you are finished. Start the game and press the keys you specified to display the messages you created in the binds.
