How to Fix Game Lag on Microsoft Windows 7

While Microsoft Windows 7 fixed most of the problems with Windows Vista, some problems, such as video game lagging, are not necessarily caused by the operating system. Video game lagging causes games to stutter and run slow. You can take steps to help speed up lagging video games so that they are playable.

Instructions

    • 1

Defragment the computer. This helps the computer run smoother, helping to speed up games. Windows 7 has a built in defragmenting program. Click the "Start" button, and type in "Disk Defragmenter." Click "Disk Defragmenter" under "Programs." Select the computer's primary hard drive, which is the "C:" drive. Click "Defragment disk."

    • 2

Close unnecessary programs that are running in the background. These programs split your resources, and some games require a lot of power to run. Closing these programs frees up some of your computer's processing capacity.

    • 3

Add new hardware. If your computer does not have a video card, by adding one you can help take pressure off the computer when running a game. A sound card will do the same. Also, if you can increase the amount of RAM available, the computer will have more memory to run large programs such as high-end video games.
