How to Breed Horses in Civilization IV: Colonization

Sid Meier's "Civilization" games provide turn-based simulations in which you guide a fledgling civilization to world domination. Like many of Meier's games, "Civilization IV" uses tech trees to unlock technology. You begin by researching a base skill. When the base skill is mastered, additional branches of the tech tree open up to continue expanding your technology base. While it might seem strange to consider horses technology, you need to follow the tech tree to unlock mounted units.

Instructions

    • 1

Research "Agriculture." This is a beginning tree for your Civilization, and it will lead to important developments needed for horses.

    • 2

Research "Animal Husbandry" (unlocked with "Agriculture"). This leads to two new technologies: "Writing" and "Horseback Riding." It also unlocks pastures and horses.

    • 3

Build a "Stable." If horses are not native to your civilization, purchase horses from another civilization to begin breeding them.

    • 4

Research the "Horseback Riding" skill (unlocks when you build a stable). You will now be able to train mounted units, such as "Horse Archers" and "Cavalry."
