Get a job in the same career track as the reward you want to earn. "The Sims 2 Strategy Guide/FAQ" on Cheat Code Central provides a list of careers and the reward that each one earns:

Meet the Sim's Wants and Needs. A Sim performs well at work if his or her Aspiration Meter and Needs Meters are all at least green before leaving for work. You can check the Job Performance Meter by clicking on the "Skills &Career" icon, which looks like a person sitting at a desk.
Earn the skill points required for a promotion. Skills are displayed in the "Skills &Career" tab. There seven Skills: Cooking, Cleaning, Mechanical, Charisma, Body, Logic, Creativity and Cleaning. There are 10 points to earn for each skill. The points needed to earn a promotion are highlighted.
Make enough friends to get a promotion. In the "Skills &Career" tab under the Job Performance Meter there is a blue smiley face with a number next to it. The number is how many friends the Sim needs to get a promotion. Make friends by talking to other Sims. You can check how many friends you have by clicking on the "Friends" icon, which looks like two people standing next to each other.
Repeat steps 2-4 until the Sim reaches level 4, 5, or 6 in his or her career. The level the Sim needs to reach in order to get the Career Reward will depend on which career the Sim is in. "The Sims 2 Strategy Guide/FAQ" provides a list of careers and the level each one requires before a reward is made available:
Politics: City Council Member (Level 5)
Medicine: Intern (Level 4)
Business: Executive (Level 5)
Athletic: All Star (Level 5)
Criminal: Con Artist (Level 4)
Military: Junior Officer (Level 4)
Slacker: Projectionist (Level 6)
Law Enforcement: Detective (Level 6)
Culinary: Prep Cook (Level 6)
Science: Inventor (Level 6)
Place the Career Reward in the Sim's home. You can find Career Rewards by clicking on the "Rewards" icon, which looks like an open treasure chest. In the "Rewards" tab, click on the "Career Rewards" icon, which looks like a treasure chest sitting next to a desk that has a person sitting behind it. Click the "Next" arrow to scroll to the correct reward. Click on the reward and move your mouse to the desired location in the Sim's house. Use the period and comma keys to rotate the reward if necessary. Click to release the reward.
