Begin your "Civilization" game.
Choose the "New Game" option at the top of the options list on the opening game menu. This brings you to the "Choose Your World" screen, where you can customize the gameplay experience.
Set the five available options according to your game preferences. "World Size" determines the size of the planet. Smaller worlds usually result in shorter games. "Land Mass and Water Coverage" sets the ratio of water to dry land. "Climate" determines how often certain types of terrain are encountered. Dry options produce more desert-type regions, while wet options produce moist environments such as jungles and flood plains. The "Age" of the planet refers to how earthquakes, continental drift and other factors have affected its formation and land masses. "Temperature" works similarly to "Climate," and "Barbarian" determines the level of barbarian activity in the game world.
Click the "O" button when you finish making your choices. This brings you to the "Player Setup" screen.
Set the "Player Setup" options to your liking. "Your Civilization" determines what kind of tribe you command. "Your Opponents" are the number and kind, if any, of competitors you will face. "Difficulty" makes the game more or less challenging. "Game Rules" allow you to choose the criteria for a victory and decide whether to allow specific advantages and disadvantages for each civilization. Choose a portrait and name before exiting this screen.
Click the "O" button when you finish making your choices. A brief introduction will appear, and your game will begin.
