How to Craft a Compass in Minecraft

"Minecraft" is an independent game developed by Markus Persson and his game studio Mojang. The game, which is in a beta stage as of June 2011, allows players to build objects using blocks. Users can place, break and pick up blocks and in turn the blocks can be used to craft items. One of the items that a player can craft is a compass. The compass points players toward their spawn point, or the area where they started the game. This can help lost players find their way home.

Instructions

    • 1

Collect iron ore from the map. You will need at least a stone pickaxe. Iron ore is found below ground. Players may find iron ore in caves. You will need at least four blocks of iron ore.

    • 2

Collect a fuel source. This could be coal, wood or charcoal. Coal is found below ground from coal ore blocks. Wood can be gathered from trees. Charcoal is created by smelting wood in a furnace.

    • 3

Collect redstone dust. This is harvested from a redstone ore block. These can be found deep below ground. You will only need one.

    • 4

Create a furnace if you do not have one. A furnace is made by placing eight cobblestone blocks in a work bench, leaving the center space open.

    • 5

Open the furnace and place the fuel source in the bottom-left space. Place the iron ore in the space above that. The ore will be smelted in to an iron ingot. Create four ingots.

    • 6

Open the work bench. Place an ingot at the top-center and bottom-center of the work bench. Place an ingot at right-center and left-center. Place the redstone dust in the middle.

    • 7

Drag-and-drop the compass into your inventory. The compass will always point toward the spawn point, whether it is in your inventory or equipped. The compass does not work properly in the Nether.
