How to Put Music on Frets on Fire

Frets on Fire is an open-source game for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Released in 2006, it emulates the game play of the popular console music games Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Because the program is open source, it is easily "moddable," and the community supporting the game uses the in-game tools and knowledge of the Python source code for resembling the more popular console music games. One of those built-in tools is a music importer to convert songs to the game play format or to import pre-made songs.

Instructions

    • 1

Upload your own .ogg files to the game by moving the .ogg file to the directory "c:\program files\frets on fire\data\songs\name_of_song," where "name_of_song" is the name of the song. Open the game and select "Song Editor," then select the song you uploaded to edit the song's notation.

    • 2

Insert your Guitar Hero or Guitar Hero 2 DVD and open Frets on Fire. Go to "Song Editor," then "Import Songs" and "Import from Disc." This takes a few hours, depending on your computer's speed.

    • 3

Download songs from a fan site such as "fretsonfiresongs.com" and extract the .rar file to "c:\program files\frets on fire\data\songs." Usually songs that have been converted already have correct formatting, including individual directories for each song.
