How to Mine Red Dust

You can gather and use redstone dust in Minecraft to provide electricity for a wide variety of contraptions. Minecraft was developed by Markus Persson who is also known by the name "Notch." The game allows users to manipulate the entire in-game world using tools made from wood, stone and iron ore. A redstone block, when mined, will yield redstone dust which can be used in electrical circuitry. If you want to gather and use redstone dust in Minecraft, follow these simple steps.

Craft an iron pickax. Gather iron on the walls of caves by hitting the iron ore with a stone pickax. Smelt three iron ores in an oven. Click on a workbench and place three iron billings on the top row, adding two sticks down the center in the two remaining center spots. Click on the iron pickax in the upper right corner of the workbench window and place the pickax in the bottom row of your inventory.

Locate redstone blocks. Redstone can be found in caves and deep below the surface of the map. Find caves and follow them down into the depths of your map, scanning the cave for redstone. Redstone looks like a stone block with red glowing squares.

Mine the redstone. Hit the redstone with an iron pickax. The process of gathering redstone will take longer than stone or iron blocks. Once hit, the redstone block will release up to five redstone dust particles which can be gathered and used in circuitry.
