How to Pick a Hero in Dota

"Dawn of the Ancients" is a popular, custom, user-made map for the PC game "Warcraft 3" by Blizzard Entertainment. It is an online battle involving 10 players who are divided into two teams. Each player controls a unique hero with powerful magic abilities and must use teamwork, strategy and communication to help usher his team to victory.

Instructions

  Launch "Warcraft 3" or its expansion, "Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne."

  Join a "Defense of the Ancients" game through the "Custom Game" menu, whether through Blizzard's Battle.net service, a private server, or a local area network.

  Click on one of the taverns on the game map to see a list of heroes from which you can choose. Each hero has distinct abilities. To increase your team's chances of success, choose the hero with which you are most comfortable and familiar. If you're just starting your career as a "Dawn of the Ancients" player, type "-random" into the chat box and the game will choose a random hero for you.

  Upgrade your hero with items that you purchase from shops. Click on any of the shops in the village and browse the inventory for items that boost your hero's primary stat, be it strength, intellect or agility. Choose from items that enhance your defensive abilities, your offensive abilities, your movement speed or more.

  Click on the red cross icon on your character's menu to upgrade his primary skill. This skill will prove invaluable once you reach the battlefield.
  
  Your chosen hero is now ready to choose a lane and face the enemy.
