How to Build an Ocean Exhibit for Zoo Tycoon

The original Zoo Tycoon allows users to create and control their own computer-animated zoos, complete with food stands, scenery and guest bathrooms. The game's varied selection of animals to choose from is even more diverse with the Marine Mania expansion pack (originally packaged along with the Dinosaur Digs expansion pack), which offers water-dwelling creatures like bottle nose dolphins, orca whales and sharks. Constructing an ocean or marine life exhibit is similar to building any other animal exhibit.

Instructions

  1. Exhibit Construction

    • 1

Find space for the new exhibit in your zoo. Make at least six squares of open space, although larger ocean creatures like orcas or highly sociable ones such as dolphins will require larger exhibits.

    • 2

Click on the construction button on the right side of the screen. This opens a new set of buttons.

    • 3

Select the build tank button, and scroll down to the marine exhibit fences. They are glass tank walls with white tops.

    • 4

Click on the desired tank wall fencing and move the arrow (now with an image of the fence) over to the open land area. It will show up green when you move it over a suitable area, and will be red where you are unable to place the fence.

    • 5

Click and drag the fence in the desired exhibit shape. This may involve multiple clicking. A full tank with water will pop up once all the walls are connected. Leave space surrounding the exhibit if you plan to expand it in the future, or make sure nearby paths and attractions can be easily renovated.

    Stock the tank

    • 6

Go back over to the left of the screen and click on the "Adopt animals" button. This opens a window with all of the animals available for purchase. Note that it takes time for all animals to be unlocked.

    • 7

Scroll down to the marine animals and select one. Move the arrow over the tank to place the creature in the exhibit. Add as many of that animal as you like, and click on the gender button at the bottom of the screen to switch female to male and vice versa. Name the animals in your exhibit by clicking on them individually. Click on their default given name and type a new one.

    • 8

Click on the construction button and select the foliage tab. Scroll down to marine foliage and select the appropriate plants for your chosen animal (an informative tab on habitat preferences is found in the adopt animals tab). Place the plants on the bottom of the tank by clicking. Add rocks from the rocks tab.

    • 9

Click on the staff button to the left of the screen and select marine specialists. Marine specialists must be on staff to maintain and care for aquatic creatures, and to put on shows with dolphins and orcas. By going back to the construction button, you can add a ladder for the specialists to enter the tank.
