How to Be Better at Macro in StarCraft

Macro in "StarCraft" refers to taking control of your game as a whole. Whereas micro means taking control of individual units to strengthen your game, macro is more about ensuring you have enough units, your economy is bustling and you're learning the technologies necessary to your strategy. While you need a solid mixture of micro and macro to win a game, how well you macro determines the tone of the game.

Instructions

Build workers consistently. Workers serve as the driving force for your economy. If you only have one base, it might be impossible to always build workers, but as you expand, you should pump out workers constantly.

    • 2

Set your workers to automatically gather minerals when they are created. To do so, click your base, then click "Set Rally Point" and click one of the blue minerals.

    • 3

Set a time to harvest vespene gas, such as when you reach 13 units and again when you reach 21 units. Vespene gas is one of the two main resources in the game, along with minerals. It's common for players to completely forget about harvesting vespene gas, because you must build a harvesting building above the gas geyser. It's impossible to suggest a set time to harvest vespene gas because each race and strategy requires different amounts of gas.

Expand when you have the opportunity. Expanding refers to setting up another base at a mineral field. The Terran are typically slow to expand, while Protoss expand slightly faster and Zerg expand the fastest. As a Zerg, focus on laying down twice as many bases as your opponent. While the decision to expand depends on if your opponent is rushing and the strategy you wish to employ, you should generally look to expand once you reach 700 minerals or more. If you're the Zerg, you can expand at 500 minerals.

Produce units constantly. Aside from workers, you must also constantly produce militaristic units. Before you engage in a battle, fill your queues with units. If your units die, you'll have more on the way. Do not build units from the same buildings. For example, as the Zerg, you must create more hatcheries to produce more units for the Zerg, while barracks produce foot soldiers for the Terran.

Focus primarily on your bases. While you can and should spy on the other team, it's imperative to focus on your bases. Doing so allows you to gauge exactly what you need, such as units and technology.
