Change your computer monitor's resolution to 1024 x 768. Right-click your desktop and click "Screen Resolution." Select 1024 x 768 from the sliding menu bar and click "Apply." "Civilization 3" was designed to run in this screen resolution and if you use a different one that is too high or too low it could lead to display issues and the game not running properly.
Download and install the patches from the "Civilization 3" website (see References). These patches are designed specifically to increase performance and decrease problems experienced while playing the game. If you are experiencing a glitch or issue that is due to the game's code and not your computer, the patches will address and fix these issues.
Run "Civilization 3" in compatibility mode with Windows XP. Right-click the "Civilization 3" icon you use to play the game and click "Properties." Click the "Compatibility" tab and select the option for the "Windows XP" operating system. "Civilization 3" was designed to run under Windows XP and earlier operating systems, so attempting to run it in Windows Vista or Windows 7 may naturally lead to issues.
