How Do I Go Up or Down in Depth in Dwarf Fortress?

"Dwarf Fortress" is a computer game developed and released by Bay 12 Games. Rather than using the 3D or 2D vector-based or bitmapped graphics found in many other games, "Dwarf Fortress" uses a tileset made of ASCII characters. In "Dwarf Fortress," players control a number of dwarves adventuring through a large play area to create a new home. Due to graphical limitations, the game represents three-dimensional space using only two visible dimensions. However, players may move up or down in depth using a keyboard shortcut.

Instructions

    • 1

Load your current game of "Dwarf Fortress," or begin a new game.

    • 2

Check the bottom right-hand corner of the screen to see what level you're currently on. The game displays your current depth numerically. Levels of numerically greater value are nearer the surface than levels of lower value. For example, level 93 is closer to the surface than level 87 is.

    • 3

Hold down either the left or the right "Shift" key, then press the "," key to move up or the "." key to move down.
