How to Use the Oregon Trail ROM

The "Oregon Trail" is an educational computer game that pitted you against the harsh life of the 1800s. Travel from the town of Independence all the way to Oregon City, hunting for food, crossing overflowing rivers and fighting off deadly illnesses. You need to balance your needs between hunting tools, such as extra bullets for hunting, or wagon parts, in case of an accident. To use the original "Oregon Trail" ROM you first need the Apple II emulator before you can play the game.

  Download the Apple II emulator. Search "Classic Gaming" on any online search engine to find the Classic Gaming website. Click on "Apple II" on the sidebar on the left side of the screen. Select the emulators' link. Click on the link in the "Website" column which takes you to a new site. Click on download. Save the zip file in a place you can easily access, like your desktop.

  Obtain a free file extraction program by searching on any online search engine. Go back to the folder you saved the Apple II zip file. Extract the files. Return to the Classic Gaming website. Click on "Apple II" on the sidebar. Open up the "Game Museum" link on the main Apple II page. Select "Oregon Trail" from the selection of downloadable games that come up.

  Download the game zip file. Under the files heading, click on the link called "otrail.zip." Save the zip file in the same folder as the extracted emulator. Extract the saved file using your file extraction software application. Go into the emulator folder and open up the "AppleWin.exe" file.

  Open up "Oregon Trail." On the right side of the AppleWin emulator, there is a selection of button menus. Click on the button with the picture of a disk drive and the number one. Go to the folder where you saved the extracted "Oregon Trail" files. Select the "Otrail_1.bin" file. Click on the button with the picture of a disk drive with the number "2." Go back to the folder and select the "Otrail_2.bin" file. Select the button with the picture of the Apple Logo to use the game.
