  Stock up on the highest grade Poke Ball accessible in the game. This will vary based on how far into the game you are. For example, if you have reached Cinnabar Island in Pokemon Red version, then you should buy Ultra Balls as these will give you the best chance of catching the Pokemon.

  Stock up on the highest grade potion available in the game. If you are fighting a Pokemon that is tough to capture, then it will most likely do some serious damage to your team. Stocking up on potions gives you an advantage over the Pokemon you are trying to capture because you will be able to heal your Pokemon while the opponent cannot.

  Stock up on revives, max revives, or full revives, whichever is available to you based on where you are in the game. Being able to revive your Pokemon during battle if they have fainted is a great asset because often times only one or two of your Pokemon possess the ability needed to make the opponent easier to capture.

Have the Right Pokemon for the Job

  Have a Pokemon that has the ability to put the opponent to sleep. Putting another Pokemon to sleep will give you the best chance of capturing it, increasing catch rate from one to two. Commonly used moves that will put another Pokemon to sleep include Sing, Hypnosis and Sleep Powder. A sleeping Pokemon cannot attack.

  Have a Pokemon that has the ability to freeze the opponent. Freezing the opponent will also give you the best chance of capturing it, increasing the catch rate from one to two. Commonly used moves that will freeze another Pokemon are Ice Beam, Blizzard and Ice Punch. A frozen Pokemon cannot attack.

  Have a Pokemon that can paralyze the opponent. Paralyzing the opposing Pokemon will increase the catch rate from one to 1.5. Commonly used moves that will paralyze the opponent include Body Slam, Thunder shock and Thunderbolt. Paralyzing the opponent also gives the chance that the opposing Pokemon will not attack.

  Have a Pokemon that can burn the opponent. Burning the opponent will increase the catch rate from one to 1.5 as well. Commonly used moves that will burn another Pokemon include Flamethrower, Ember and Firespin. A Pokemon that is burned will take a small amount of damage after each turn.

  Have a Pokemon with the ability to poison the opponent. Poisoning the opponent will increase the catch rate from one to 1.5. Commonly used moves to poison an opponent include Poison Sting, Poison Powder and Sludge. A poisoned Pokemon will take a small amount of damage after each turn.

Entering Battle

  Save the game before entering an important battle in which you are trying to catch the opposing Pokemon. This will ensure that if you do not catch it on your first try, you can simply turn off the game without saving (after the failed attempt) and turn it back on to try again as if the battle never happened.

  Reduce the opponent's health down as low as possible without making it faint. This will greatly increase the chance of capturing the Pokemon.

  Use a Pokemon to freeze, sleep, burn, poison or paralyze the opponent before you throw your Poke Ball. This will greatly increase your chances of catching the Pokemon.

  Throw your Poke Ball once the opponent is weakened. Sometimes a Pokemon will be caught on the first try, and sometimes a Pokemon will be caught on the fifteenth try. This is all random to the game which is why it is imperative to bring a large supply of Poke Balls into battle.
