How to Break Stones in Pokemon Gold

"Pokemon Gold" features moves that can be taught to a Pokemon that work outside of battle. While most moves are taught by Hidden Machines (HMs), one such move is taught by a Technical Machine (TM). This move is Rock Smash. Rock Smash allows a Pokemon to break stones and boulders to reveal Pokemon inside, such as Krabby. You can also use Rock Smash to open new entrances, mostly inside of caves.

Instructions

    • 1

Enter the house northeast of the Goldenrod City gym, after defeating the Goldenrod gym leader Whitney. Speak to the lady inside the house to receive the Squirt Bottle, an item that wakes up a Sudowoodo.

    • 2

Travel to Route 36, located south of Ecruteak City.

    • 3

Use the Squirt Bottle on the Sudowoodo in the middle of Route 36. It wakes up and you must fight it. You can either capture it or defeat it in battle.

    • 4

Speak to the man directly to the east of where the Sudowoodo was. He gives you TM08, Rock Smash, for free.

    • 5

Press "Start" on your Game Boy Color and select "Pack" from the menu, followed by the "TM/HM" section.

    • 6

Select TM08 from the list provided. Select a Pokemon to learn the move; any Fight-type Pokemon can learn Rock Smash. If a Pokemon is able to learn the move, the word "Able" appears next to its name.

    • 7

Stand next to a stone that can be broken and press "A." Select "Yes" when asked if you want to use Rock Smash to break the rock. Rocks that can be broken are nearly identical to other rocks. The only difference is the numerous cracks running along the surface of the rock.
