Evolution List for Pokemon Gold

"Pokemon Gold," released for the Game Boy Color in 2000, brought the amount of available Pokemon to catch up to 251. To catch all 251 Pokemon, many Pokemon must be evolved into a new form. In "Pokemon Gold," there are four ways a Pokemon can evolve: by leveling, by using an item, by trading or by how happy the Pokemon is.
  1. Evolve by Leveling

    • A large majority of Pokemon in "Pokemon Gold" evolve by reaching the appropriate level. This level varies based on the Pokemon. For example, Chikorita, one of the Pokemon you can choose at the beginning of the game, evolves into Bayleef once he reaches Level 16. Pokemon can gain levels by earning experience, given at the end of a successful battle against a wild Pokemon or a Pokemon trainer. When the level necessary for evolution is reached, the Pokemon immediately evolves at the end of the battle. Some Pokemon, like Bayleef, can evolve a second time when the appropriate level is reached. One exception to this is Tyrogue -- not only does he evolve at Level 20, he evolves based on which statistic, Attack or Defense, is higher.

    Evolve by Using an Item

    • Some Pokemon do not evolve no matter which level they are. For these Pokemon, such as Pikachu, a specific stone is needed to evolve. When this stone is used, the Pokemon immediately evolves, regardless of level. Stones can be found throughout the game and often correspond to a specific element, such as Thunder Stones and Leaf Stones. However, Pokemon evolved with a stone learn moves at a slower rate compared to their pre-evolution counterparts. One tactic players use is to wait until their Pokemon learn specific moves and then evolve that Pokemon using a stone. The stone is removed from your inventory when it is used.

    Evolve by Trading

    • Some Pokemon, such as Kadabra and Machoke, can only be evolved when they are traded to another player. You can trade Pokemon to another "Pokemon Gold, "Silver" or "Crystal" user at any Pokemon Center at any time in the game. After the trade is complete, your Pokemon evolves into its new form. For example, Machoke evolves into Machamp after the trade is completed. Some Pokemon must also hold a specific item during a trade to evolve. One example is Scyther, a Bug-type Pokemon, who evolves into Scizor if it is traded while it is holding a Metal Coat.

    Evolve by Happiness

    • New to "Pokemon Gold" is happiness. Each Pokemon has a level of happiness based on how you treat them. Pokemon who are often defeated in battle or are not used much are unhappy, while Pokemon who are used often and win battles are happy. Some Pokemon, like Togepi, only evolve when his happiness is at its maximum level. Happiness can not be checked like a normal statistic -- you must visit Goldenrod City and speak to the woman north of the Bike Shop to discover how happy your Pokemon is. When a Pokemon is at maximum happiness and gains a level, that Pokemon evolves, such as Togepi evolving into Togetic.
