How Do I Fix Pokemon Gold on My GBA if It Is Messed Up?

Pokemon Gold for the Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance is part of the second generation of Pokemon games by Nintendo and Game Freak. Unlike more modern game systems that use digital save files to record game progress, Game Boy Advance games such as the Pokemon titles save the games to the game cartridge itself. The save file is maintained using a small battery inside the cartridge, but problems can occur when this battery begins losing its charge. To correct these problems, you must replace the cartridge battery.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat head eyeglass screwdriver
  • CR2025 battery
  • Tape
  • Game Boy Advance console

Instructions

    • 1

Turn over the Pokemon Gold cartridge so that the label faces down. Remove the security screw by pressing its ridges with the tip of the eyeglass screwdriver so that it turns in a counterclockwise direction. Lift off the back panel of the cartridge once the screw is removed.

    • 2

Pry the tab covering the current battery away gently and remove the battery from the cartridge circuit board. Place the new battery into the battery slot; make sure it is oriented in the same direction as the previous battery.

    • 3

Press the tab down gently onto the new battery and tape it in place. The tape will not negatively effect the battery or the circuit board and is necessary to keep the tab pressed against the battery.

    • 4

Replace the back panel of the cartridge and use the screwdriver to rotate the security screw clockwise until it is fully inserted into the cartridge again.

    • 5

Insert the Pokemon Gold cartridge into the Game Boy Advance system and turn on the power. Begin a new game and save it, then reset the system to confirm that your saved game is still there.
