In "Pokemon Crystal," released for the GameBoy Color in 2001, you can find Hidden Machines throughout your quest that will teach your Pokemon a move. The HMs are used to teach Pokemon new abilities and on the game map to navigate and explore. The dive ability -- or "surf," as it's known In "Crystal" -- allows you to easily traverse bodies of water. It is learned by obtaining HM 03.
