Success in "Pokemon Ruby" depends upon your collecting the various badges available at the Pokemon Gyms scattered throughout the game world. Earning badges allows you to train and battle with stronger Pokemon, and you need to get all eight badges if you want to participate in Pokemon League, a tournament that pits you against the world's greatest trainers. To get started on your quest toward gathering up the badges, you will need to get Roxanne's badge in Rustboro City.

Enter the Rustboro City Gym.

Equip a Grass or Water Pokemon like Treecko or Mudkip.

Speak with the woman in the top right corner of the room. This is Roxanne, the Gym Leader. Speaking with her initiates Pokemon combat.

Defeat Roxanne's Geodude and Nosepass. Use Grass or Water Type elemental attacks repeatedly. When Nosepass faints, Roxanne will declare your victory and give you your first badge.
