99 Nuggets Cheat for Pokemon Blue

In the "Pokemon" games, a Nugget is a valuable item that you can sell for 5000 points in any store. They are quite rare, however. But in the "Blue" and "Red" versions, you can perform a simple cheat to get as many Nuggets as you want, with no Gameshark or Game Genie required.

Missingno and the Cloning Trick
- Cloning items in "Pokemon" involves finding a way to encounter the "Missingno" Pokemon. Originally used as a placeholder, Missingno -- short for "Missing Number" -- enables several glitches in the game, including the ability to clone items in a certain slot. This works by effectively overwriting a certain flag that keeps track of the item number in that slot. Missingno looks like a blocky mess of static and is denoted by the name "MISSINGNO." or "_M."
The Process
- To get 99 Nuggets, first put the Nugget in your 6th item slot. Then Fly to Viridian City and talk to the old man in the north of town. Say that you aren't in a hurry and watch his demonstration to catch a Weedle. Then Fly to Cinnabar Island and surf up and down the right coast until you encounter a Missingno. Defeat it or run away, and afterward you will have 129 Nuggets -- although the number will appear glitched. Sell 30 Nuggets to get down to 99, which makes the glitch go away.
Warnings
- You do not need to catch Missingno for the cheat to work--you only need to battle it. However, if you do catch it you can mess up some of the game graphics. For instance, if you battle with it in your party, both your avatar and your opponent's will be glitched. If you catch Missingno. and have trouble with the altered graphics, release Missingno and then view the "Status" screen of a non-glitched Pokemon.
Other Cheat Benefits
- In addition to Missingno, you may also find Pokemon from the last area you visited. You can use this trick to encounter Pokemon from the Safari Zone--just fly to the Safari Zone, encounter a Pokemon there and then go to Cinnabar Island. You may also encounter high level Pokemon depending on the player's name. For instance, if your name is "BLUE" you may encounter a level 139 Abra, a 134 Golduck or a level 145 Starmie in addition to Missingno. These can be tough to catch depending on your level, but if you use the cloning trick to get 99 Master Balls it becomes a snap.
