How to Get a Better Fishing Rod in Pokemon Red

In your quest to capture all 150 Pokemon in "Pokemon Red," one thing that can really set you back is not having a decent fishing rod. The most basic pole available in the game, the Old Rod, allows you to reel in only a single kind of Water Type Pokemon, the nearly useless Magikarp. If you want to capture more water-bound monsters, you will have to get hold of the Good Rod and, eventually, the Super Rod, which allow you to capture medium- and high-level Pokemon, respectively.

Instructions

Good Rod

  Travel to Fuchsia City along the bike path west of Celadon City.

  Enter the small house you see just east of the Pokemon Gym.

  Walk through the back door to reach the house's fenced-in back yard.

  Speak to the old man to receive the Good Rod.
Super Rod

  Equip your Pokemon Flute.

  Travel to Lavender Town.

  Head south along Route 12.

  Use the Pokemon Flute to capture the sleeping Snorlax blocking the path.

  Enter the second house along the route to receive the Super Rod from an enthusiastic but retired fisherman dwelling inside.
