What Does EV Mean in Pokemon?

EVs, or Effort Values, are hidden stats in the "Pokemon" franchise that determine your Pokemon's main stats. Different types of EVs increase depending on what enemy a Pokemon fights. To maximize these stats for a certain level, fight lots of battles against weaker opponents and use vitamins on your Pokemon such as Protein and Iron.
  1. Pokemon Stats

    • In the latest "Pokemon" games, Pokemon have six vital statistics: HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense and Speed. HP determines how much damage a Pokemon can take before it faints. Attack and Special Attack indicate how much damage it deals with its physical and special attacks, respectively, while Defense and Special Defense reduce the overall damage it takes. Finally, Speed determines which Pokemon acts first in a particular round.

    About EVs

    • When you fight a Pokemon, whether wild or captured, your own Pokemon will get EVs for beating it. The amount and type of EV it gains depends on that Pokemon's species. For instance, defeating a Pidgey will give the battle participant 1 Speed EV, while an Absol will give 2 Attack EVs. Pokemon that share experience via an item such as Exp Share will also gain a share of the EVs.

    Getting High EVs

    • There are several ways of getting high EVs besides fighting a lot of certain Pokemon types. The first is to give the Pokemon special items, such as HP Up, Iron and Calcium. You can also have it train while holding special items, such as the Macho Brace, Power Weight and Power Lens. The Macho Brace doubles EV gain from fights, while the Power items give you EVs in a certain stat after every battle.

    Other Considerations

    • EVs cap at 255 per stat and 510 overall. This means that you can only boost a single stat's EV by 255, which corresponds roughly to 63 stat points when the Pokemon is Level 100. In addition, one Pokemon can hold only 510 EVs in all of its stats, so if you have already maxed out one EV category at 255 EVs, that Pokemon can only gain 255 more EVs. So if you have a Pokemon that specializes in Physical moves, you should prioritize its Attack EVs over Special Attack EVs. If you have one that specializes in status effects, prioritize its Speed and Defense.
