What Do Potions Do in Pokemon?

In all "Pokemon" games, you play an up-and-coming Pokemon trainer, starting with your very first Pokemon and ending when you defeat the current reigning Champion in the Pokemon World. To help your Pokemon fight its hardest, use Potions to increase its HP when it gets injured. This will let it fight longer without having to return to a PokeCenter for healing.
  1. HP and Potions

    • When a Pokemon's HP -- or hit point total -- reaches zero, it will faint and will be unavailable for battle until you heal it at a Pokemon center. To prevent this, give it a Potion to restore HP. You can only use a Potion on a Pokemon that is still conscious; i.e. before it has run out of HP. A Potion restores 20 HP. At the beginning of the game, a Potion is usually enough to restore at least half of a Pokemon's HP, although its effectiveness lessens as the game continues.

    Buying and Using Potions

    • You can buy Potions at any PokeMart. Most major cities have a PokeMart that sells them and other items. You can use Potions in or out of battle. To use a Potion in battle, select "Item" and then select the Potion; then select "Use" and designate which Pokemon you want to heal. To use a Potion out of battle, press the start button to bring up the main menu, then select "Items."

    Advanced Potions

    • Super Potions, Hyper Potions, Max Potions and Full Restores are improved versions of the humble Potion; Super Potions restore 50 HP, Hyper Potions restore 200 HP, Max Potions restore all HP and Full Restores restore all HP and restore the Pokemon's status to normal. These improved Potions are available in later cities and towns as you explore the region, with the strongest ones available only in the final city in the game before you fight the Elite Four/Elite Five.

    Alternatives to Potions

    • Other items can also restore HP, notably different drinks that you can find in vending machines. These drinks restore more HP for a lower cost than Potions. For instance, a Fresh Water only costs 200 points compared to a Super Potion's 700, but they both restore 50 HP. Other varieties include Soda Pop, Lemonade, and MooMoo Milk, which restore 60, 80, and 100 HP respectively. However, drinks are harder to find and usually can't be bought in bulk. In addition, Berries also heal HP, and they can be given to Pokemon to hold. When a Pokemon holds a healing Berry, they will automatically use that Berry to heal themselves when their HP drops, without needing to spend an action to use a Potion. Berries were introduced in the second generation of "Pokemon" games.
