How Do You Unlock the Gym in Viridian City in the Game Pokemon Blue for the GameBoy?

In "Pokemon Blue," you must defeat the game's eight gym leaders before you can challenge the Elite Four for the title of Pokemon League Champion. The gym in Viridian City, however, is locked the first time you come to it, and the gym leader is mysteriously absent. Even though you first visit Viridian City near the start of your journey, it is actually the last gym that stands between you and the Pokemon League Hall of Fame.

Instructions

  Travel to the Game Corner in Celadon City, and challenge the Team Rocket member inside to a battle. Walk up to the poster he was guarding, and then press the "A" button to open the door to Team Rocket's secret headquarters. Enter the headquarters and defeat Team Rocket's boss, Giovanni, in a Pokemon battle to obtain the Silph Scope.

  Enter the Silph Company office building in Saffron City, and defeat Giovanni again to clear Team Rocket out of the building and save the company. When you defeat him, Giovanni will give you the game's only Master Ball, which will catch any wild Pokemon without fail.

  Defeat Sabrina, the Saffron City gym leader, and Blaine, the Cinnabar Island gym leader, to earn your sixth and seventh badges.

  Return to Viridian City. Giovanni will unlock and reopen the Viridian City gym, and you can enter the gym and challenge him to obtain the Earth Badge.
