Why Won't Golbat Evolve in Leaf Green?

In the "Pokemon" series of games, Golbat is a blue and purple Pokemon that resembles a bat, belonging to the flying and poison types. Although Golbat evolves from Zubat immediately upon reaching level 22, making Golbat evolve into Crobat is not as simple. Like in all other "Pokemon" games, if your Golbat is unhappy with you in "Pokemon: LeafGreen," it will never evolve, no matter how many times it levels up.
  1. About Happiness

    • A Pokemon's happiness is measured on a scale between 0 and 255. Most newly caught Pokemon, including Golbat, have a default happiness of 70, although some have a higher or lower happiness depending on their species. All Pokemon are reset to their default happiness when traded. Golbat is among the handful of Pokemon that will only evolve when its happiness reaches 220 or above; once this happens, your Golbat will evolve into Crobat the next time it levels up. Daisy Oak, in Pallet Town, can examine your Golbat and tell you how happy it is.

    Events That Increase Happiness

    • Your Golbat's happiness increases by one point for every 256 steps you take while it's in your party. Grooming your Golbat increases its happiness by three points while its happiness is below 200 and by two points while its happiness is above 200. Feeding your Golbat berries that affect effort values increases its happiness by two points for each berry. Using vitamins and leveling up increases your Golbat's happiness by five, three or two points, depending on whether its happiness is below 99, between 100 and 200 or above 200.

    Events That Decrease Happiness

    • Every time your Golbat faints during a battle, it will lose one point of happiness. Using any type of herbal medicine also lowers your Golbat's happiness due to its bitter taste. Energy Powders and Heal Powders reduce happiness by five points, while Energy Roots reduce happiness by 10 points and Revival Herbs by 15. Because of this, having your Golbat faint during a battle is preferable to saving it from fainting by using a herbal medicine. Although your Golbat will still lose happiness, the loss will be smaller than it otherwise would have been.

    Soothe Bell

    • The Soothe Bell is a special item that increases all happiness gains by one point when held by a Pokemon. Although this item does nothing to reduce happiness losses, equipping your Golbat with it will increase the speed at which it gains happiness, causing it to evolve sooner. There is only one Soothe Bell in "Pokemon: LeafGreen." You can find it in the Pokemon Tower, hidden on the same spot where Mr. Fuji was standing.
