Pokemon Sapphire Characters

Brendan

• Brendan is the male protagonist offered in Pokemon Sapphire, and fills in as rival if the female character is selected. Brendan begins the game in Littleroot Town and becomes a Pokemon Trainer. Brendan battles throughout Hoenn against the leaders of the Pokemon Gyms to earn badges and become champion of the Pokemon League. Along the way he opposes Team Aqua, an organization bent on expanding the oceans. Brendan is the official canon name of Sapphire's male protagonist, and the name assigned if the player selects a female protagonist. Brendan and May's histories are interchangeable, based on which character the player selects at the beginning of the game.

May

• May is the female protagonist offered in Pokemon Sapphire, and fills in as rival if the male character is selected. May is the daughter of Professor Birch, a Pokemon Researcher living in the same town as Brendan. May is working to help her father finish the Hoenn Pokedex and plans to become a Pokemon professor. Over the course of the game, she battles Brendan and continues to help her father with his work. Eventually May gives up being a Trainer. May is the official canon name of Sapphire's female protagonist, and the name assigned if the player selects a male protagonist.

Professor Birch

• Professor Birch is a Pokemon Professor and the father of Brendan or May, depending on which gender the player selects for his character. The player rescues him from a wild Poochyena, and is rewarded with a starter Pokemon and a Pokedex.

Gym Leaders

• Gym Leaders are the highest ranking members of their Pokemon Gyms. They test the strength of Trainers and their Pokemon to determine whether they can face the Pokemon League's Elite Four, and award badges to trainers who defeat them. In Hoenn the Gym Leaders are Rock-type trainer Roxanne, Fighting-type trainer Brawley, Electric-type trianer Wattson, Fire-type trainer Flannery, Normal-type trainer Norman, Flying-type trainer Winona, Psychic-type trainers Tate and Liza and Water-type trainer Wallace. Norman is also the player character's father.

Elite Four

• The Elite Four are the best trainers in the Hoenn region, inferior only to the league Champion. The player must defeat these trainers without losing to obtain the right to challenge the champion. They can only be challenged when the player obtains all eight Gym badges. The Hoenn Elite Four consists of Dark-type trainer Sidney, Ghost-type trainer Phoebe, Ice-type trainer Glacia, and Dragon-type trainer Drake.

Steven Stone

• The champion of the Hoenn Pokemon League, Steven Stone is the most powerful trainer in Hoenn. Steven prefers using Steel-type Pokemon, and is the son of the head of the Devon Corporation. Steven lives in Mossdeep City, and when he is defeated he leaves the player the Steel-type Pokemon Beldum and a note.

Team Aqua

• Team Aqua is an organization aiming to expand the oceans and flood the world. Headed up by Archie and his two underlings Matt and Shelly, Team Aqua enacts several schemes to achieve its goal. The player thwarts them continuously throughout the game, leading them to awaken the legendary Pokemon Kyogre. They finally meet defeat at the player's hands when the player must either defeat or capture Kyogre.
