How to Get the Guards to Move in Saffron City

In Nintendo's first generation Pokemon games, "Pokemon Red" and "Pokemon Blue," and their remakes, "Pokemon LeafGreen" and "Pokemon FireRed," guards initially block the player's access to Saffron City, one of the central business districts in the Kanto region. Because players must access Saffron City to progress in the game's primary storyline, convincing the guards to move is crucial to advancement. Fortunately, performing a small favor for the guards can persuade them to leave their post and unblock the Saffron City gate.

Instructions

  Travel to Saffron City, a large metropolitan area in the center of the Kanto region. To reach Saffron City, travel east on Route 7 from Celadon City, north on Route 6 from Vermillion City, south on Route 5 from Cerulean City or west on Route 8 from Lavender Town.

  Approach the guards at the Saffron City gate and press "A" to begin a conversation. After reading the guard's dialogue, in which he complains of being thirsty, go west on Route 7 until you reach Celadon City.

  Locate the Celadon Mansion, a large, ornate building located next to the multistory Celadon Department Store. Enter the Mansion through the front door and speak to the woman inside to receive some tea.

  Follow Route 7 back to Saffron City. Speak to the thirsty guard and give him the tea. The guard will move when he has finished the tea, allowing you access to Saffron City.
