Play through the game's story mode to unlock all of the available cards in the game. The game requires players to take exams that must be passed in order to duel the game's higher ranked opponents. The exams ask questions about card effects, monster abilities and spell casting costs that can be learned by dueling against the computer.
Determine the type of deck you want to build once you have unlocked all of the game's cards. Players can assemble decks that use strong monsters to deal heavy damage; decks full of spell cards that deal damage without attacking with creatures, or decks that force their opponents to discard cards from their hand before they can play them. Knowing the type of deck you want to build will allow you to focus on the types of cards needed for that deck.
Build a monster deck with cards you can summon quickly and that deal a lot of damage. Cards such as "Magician of Faith," "Vorse Raider" and "Luster Dragon" are ideal for this type of deck. Include several trap cards such as "Minor Goblin Official," "Sakeretsu Armor" and "Call Of The Haunted" to help clear the way for your monsters to attack.
Include several spell cards in your deck so you can deal damage to an opponent who is heavily defended. "Heavy Storm," "Mystical Space Typhoon" and "Burst Stream of Destruction" can deal damage to both creatures and players. An unbeatable deck will have multiple ways of hurting an opponent, so add cards that give you multiple ways of attacking.
Test your deck out in duels against both computer and human opponents. Play against as many different types of decks as possible so you can determine your decks strengths and weaknesses. Tweak your deck by adding or subtracting cards until you find the right mix.
