Moves That Pikachu Learns in Pokemon Sapphire

Pikachu is perhaps the most recognizable of all Pokemon as many people who do not know much about the "Pokemon" series are still able to identify the small, yellow creature. The Pikachu of Ash Ketchum, in particular, is a male Pikachu from the first television series of "Pokemon" in the U.S. that travels with his companions at their side rather than in a Pokeball. For this reason, Pikachu remains as popular and unique in the early 21st century as the day Ash's Pikachu was introduced.
  1. Lightning Moves

    • Pikachu is best known for being a mouse-like Pokemon of the lightning element. Thus, it can learn several types of lightning attacks. "Thundershock," the weakest of his lightning attacks, is a move all Pikachus know inherently. "Thunderbolt" is a strong upgrade of the lightning element, while "Thunder" is the most powerful lightning attack Pikachu can learn. Pikachu also learns "Thunder Wave," which paralyzes other Pokemon. All of these lightning attacks are learned by leveling up. By getting the TM, or technical machine, number 34, you can teach your Pikachu "Shock Wave," a quick attack that cannot miss the enemy.

    Normal Moves

    • Normal moves are those without any particular element. Normal moves have simple effects such as changing you or your opponent's statistics or inflicting minor and even major damage. Attacks such as "Slam" and "Quick Attack" are examples of damage-inflicting normal moves that Pikachu learns in "Sapphire," while "Growl" and "Tail Whip" lower the foes Attack and Defensive statistics. "Double Team" raises your Pikachu's evasion stats and helps it to avoid attacks made by opposing Pokemon. Your Pikachu can learn all of these moves by leveling up.

    Psychic Moves

    • While Pikachu does not rely heavily on Psychic abilities, it can learn two of them by leveling up. They are "Agility," which is learned at level 33 and raises speed stats, and "Light Screen," which makes a barrier of protection around Pikachu that lowers the damage received from special attacks. By getting TM 44, you can teach Pikachu "Rest," which puts it to sleep for two straight turns in battle, but allows it to recover HP, or hit points, and its original status.

    Other Technical Machines

    • There are various TMs that can be found throughout the game and taught to your Pikachu. They vary in element or move type, purpose and effectiveness. For example, TM 01 will teach Pikachu Focus Punch, a powerful fight-type attack, while TM 18 will teach it "Rain Dance," a water elemental move that increases all water attack strength for five turns. There are also several more normal moves Pikachus can learn from TMs. In order to get any moves Pikachu does not learn in "Sapphire," however, you must trade Pikachus between other Game Boy Advance versions, such as "Emerald," "LeafGreen" or "FireRed."
