How to Gain Friendship in Pokemon Sapphire

In "Pokemon Sapphire," many non-player characters stress that you must bond with your Pokemon. Once you catch a Pokemon, the game gives it a hidden value that stands for Happiness. Some NPCs refer to this value as the Friendship or Tameness value. A girl in Verdanturf Town tells you how happy your Pokemon is. You can increase this value from 0 to 255 by performing certain actions. Some Pokemon evolve only when they reach a Happiness value of 220.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the Pokemon with which you want to gain friendship into your party. The Pokemon earns one Happiness point for every 265 steps you take. You must take 67,575 steps to gain 255 Friendship points, which is the maximum amount a Pokemon can earn.

Go to the Lilycove Department Store and take the elevator to the third floor. Speak to the cashier to the left and buy Protein, Iron, Calcium, Zinc, Carbos and HP Up. Give the vitamins to your Pokemon. Depending on how tame your Pokemon is, it will earn two to five Tameness points.

    • 3

Challenge the Gym Leaders, the Elite Four and the Pokemon Champion. Any Pokemon involved in these important battles earns one to three Happiness points. The happier your Pokemon, the less Happiness points it earns per battle.

    • 4

Pick up all the Item Balls on the Abandoned Ship. One of the Item Balls contains a Luxury Ball. Catch a Pokemon with a Luxury Ball instead of any other type of Poke Ball. A Pokemon caught in a Luxury Ball earns 50 percent more Tameness points than a Pokemon caught in a different kind of Poke Ball.

Speak to the woman in the Pokemon Fan Club of Slateport City. Put a Pokemon with a Happiness value between 250 and 255 in the first slot of your party. The woman will give you the Soothe Bell. Make any Pokemon hold the Soothe Bell. The Soothe Bell doubles the amount of Happiness points a Pokemon earns.
