How to Catch a Ghost Pokemon on Yellow

Ghost-type Pokemon are abundant in the Pokemon Tower area of the Nintendo Game Boy video game "Pokemon Yellow," but you will be unable to see them to battle and catch them without a key item called the Silph Scope. There is only one person from whom you can get a Silph Scope, and that's Giovanni, the leader of the evil Team Rocket, your adversaries in the game. You can find Giovanni in the group's secret hideout in Celadon City, but you will have to battle him to get him to give up the Silph Scope.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to Celadon City in the center of the Kanto region, and go into the Game Corner building to the right of the small lake in the middle of town.

    • 2

Battle the Team Rocket Grunt next to the coin counter. He has a level 20 Raticate and a Level 20 Zubat. After he leaves go up to the poster where he was standing and press the "A" button.

    • 3

Go down the hidden staircase that appears to get into Team Rocket's secret hideout. You will have to battle a number of Team Rocket Grunts inside, who use a mix of Pokemon including Raticate, Zubat, Koffing, Grimer, Drowzee and Machop, all of them around Level 20. You can leave at any point to go back out into Celadon City and heal your Pokemon.

    • 4

Fight your way through the hideout until you come to the Team Rocket Boss, Giovanni. He has a Level 25 Onix that is weak to Water and Grass-type attacks, a Level 24 Rhyhorn that you can also beat with Water and Grass-types and a Level 29 Persian that is weak against Fighting-type Pokemon. Defeat Giovanni and he will drop the Silph Scope before running away.

    • 5

Go to Lavender Town in the east of Kanto and enter the Pokemon Tower.

    • 6

Walk around inside the tower and you will be attacked by a wild Ghost-type Pokemon, either Gastly or its evolved version, Haunter. Use Psychic or Dark-type attacks to wear down the Ghost-type Pokemon's health points, but avoid using Normal, Fighting and Ground-types as they will not affect it. Once the Pokemon's health is very low and is showing in the red, throw a Pokeball to catch it.
