How Do I Get Mew in the Cerulean Cave?

In the Pokemon video games, the legendary Pokemon Mewtwo resides in a cave north of Cerulean. In the Pokemon universe, Mewtwo is an altered clone of another legendary Pokemon, Mew. Mew, unlike Mewtwo, has only been released in special Nintendo-affiliated events. However, while these events for Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow are long over, there is an obscure and complicated glitch that makes use of Cerulean Cave to obtain a Mew by exploiting flaws in the game's code.

  Proceed through the game until you have beaten the Elite Four. Obtain a Pokemon with a Special stat of 21 and put it at the top of your party. Obtain the Dig TM from the Rocket grunt who robbed the house in Cerulean City. Fly HM (from the woman in the house north of Cycling Road), and the Surf HM (from the Secret House in the Safari Zone). Teach all three moves to Pokemon within your party. Save your game before proceeding further.

  Find a trainer who you haven't already battled. Walk into his line of sight (the range which will initiate a battle with them) and quickly press the "Start" button. A menu will come up before the trainer can notice you. Use Fly to leave the trainer without fighting him.

  Find another trainer who has a reaction range of at least two spaces (instead of only fighting you when you walk directly next to him). Walk into his line of sight from a distance of at least two squares and initiate the battle. Defeat the trainer and fly to Cerulean City.

  Use Surf to reach the Cerulean Cave. Explore the cave, running from any wild Pokemon encounters, until you encounter a Ditto. Allow the Ditto to use Transform (copying the Pokemon with a Special stat of 21), then win or flee from the battle. Use Dig to escape the cave without encountering any other Pokemon.

  Return to the route with the trainer you avoided battling in Step 2. This will cause the menu to automatically appear. Press "B" to cancel out of the menu. You will then be in a battle with a wild Mew. Capture it before it can use Transform or it will become a Ditto.
