How to Fix the L & R Buttons on a GBA SP

The GBA SP, one of Nintendo's most advanced versions of the portable Gameboy, allows users to play games wherever they travel. Despite its technical attributes, this handheld gaming system can succumb to some common hardware gaming problems. One such problem is sticky buttons. This occurs when the buttons stick in the downward position and do not respond properly. Use an old toothbrush to solve this problem on the GBA SP "Left" (L) and "Right" (R) buttons.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your GBA SP. Unplug the AC adapter or remove the batteries. Also, remove any game cartridges inside the gaming console. The GBA SP must have no power source, games,or other hardware attached to it before you continue on with the repair job.

    • 2

Turn the GBA SP upside-down so the Left and Right buttons are pointing directly at the floor. This ensures any debris caught in the buttons can loosen due to gravity.

    • 3

Gently brush the Left and Right buttons with a dry toothbrush while the GBA SP is still upside-down. Try to get the bristles inside the gap between the buttons and the console's main body. This is where troublesome debris and dirt rests, causing the sticky button effect.

    • 4

Turn on your GBA SP and test out the Left and Right buttons. Continue cleaning the buttons with the toothbrush, if the problem has not resolved.

Call Nintendo customer service if problems continue after cleaning the buttons with a toothbrush. Another problem may exist that needs the attention of an electronics specialist.
