How to Get Surf in Pokémon Ruby for the GBA

In "Pokemon Ruby," a role-playing game developed by Nintendo for the Game Boy Advance system, players train and battle with Pokemon in the fiction Hoenn region. As they gain levels and experience, Pokemon can learn new abilities to assist the player in combat. The surf ability allows Pokemon to travel across bodies of water, allowing players to reach previously inaccessible game areas.

Instructions

  Travel to Petalburg. Petalburg is located in the southwestern corner of the world map at the intersection of routes 102 and 105. To reach Petalburg, travel north from Dewford on Route 105 or west on Route 102 from Oldale.

  Travel to the Petalburg Gym. Enter the gym and battle your way through the first three rooms of trainers. Each trainer uses a special combat technique, which is indicated on the door of the room. These methods include One-Hit KO, Accuracy Attack, Defense, Speed and Recovery. Complete three of these rooms to reach Norman, the Petalburg Gym leader.

  Defeat Norman. Norman primarily uses normal-type Pokemon. Fighting-type Pokemon are most effective against normal types. When you have defeated Norman, exit the gym.

  Travel to Wally's house. Wally's house is located next to the gym in Petalburg. Speak to Wally's father and he will give you HM03, which teaches the surf ability. Open your inventory and press "A" to select HM03. Use the D-pad to select an eligible target from your party. Press "A" to teach the selected Pokemon the surf ability.
