How to Breed Mudkip in Ruby

Nintendo's Pokemon franchise has undergone a number of generations since it's North American release in 1998. Pokemon Ruby, like it's predecessors and successors, presents players with a choice between one of three starting Pokemon representing Fire, Water and Grass types. The Water-type, Mudkip is breedable like many others, allowing the player to have multiple Mudkips and their evolved forms, and trade extras for other Pokemon.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the Pokemon Day Care center on Route 117.

    • 2

Speak with the old woman inside and leave your Mudkip or it's evolved forms, Swampert and Marshtomp with them. If you are using a Ditto for breeding, either gender will be fine. Otherwise, you will need to leave a female in order to produce Mudkip offspring.

    • 3

Speak with the old woman again and leave another Pokemon with them. If you are leaving Ditto, skip to step 5. Otherwise, leave a male Pokemon that is compatible with Mudkip, Swampert or Marshtomp. A list of compatible Pokemon, and moves that the resulting offspring Mudkips will learn as a result of the male's species, is available in Resources.

    • 4

Speak with the old man out front to determine the compatibility of your Pokemon. So long as he doesn't say that they "seem to prefer to play with other Pokemon," they will produce offspring. However, the more friendly the man indicates the two Pokemon are with one another, the faster the breeding process will be.

    • 5

Leave the Day Care. You can continue to other areas or pace outside, so long as you allow a sufficient amount of time to pass.

    • 6

Return to the Day Care after some time has passed. If the Pokemon have produced an egg, the old man in front of the Day Care will inform you so and offer you the egg. Be aware that if you have a full party, he won't inform you without you initiating the conversation, even though he still has an egg for you.

    • 7

Accept the egg and continue on your way. If you don't wish for your Mudkip, Swampert or Marshtomp and the other Pokemon used for breeding to gain experience and level without your control, remove them from the Day Care first by talking to the old woman inside and paying the fee to get them back. If you wish to breed further Mudkips, leave them in the Day Care and repeat steps 5, 6 and 7 as necessary until the desired number of Mudkip eggs are obtained.

    • 8

Keep the egg in your party and refrain from riding either the Mach Bike or the Acro Bike. Bike riding will not count towards your steps, which is the counter used to determine when the egg hatches. As you travel, the egg will pass through various stages of "readiness" to hatch. When it finally hatches, you will be the owner of a fresh new Mudkip of random gender, with any special abilities that can be bred into them as a result of their parent combination.
