How to Cut a Tree in Pokemon Silver

"Pokemon Silver" offers you the opportunity to teach Pokemon skills that can be used outside of battle. These skills, known as "Hidden Machines" ("HM") are scattered around the Johto region. Throughout the game, you will encounter small trees and shrubs that block your path to the next area. You will need to find and use "HM 01" ("Cut") to cut it down in order to progress.

Instructions

  Go to Ilex Forest after the second fight with your rival, Gary. This will automatically occur after you have defeated the Azalea gym leader, Bugsy.

  Speak to the trainer who is looking for Farfetch'd.

  Walk down and right on the current map screen using the directional pad. Beyond the platform, walk left and you will find Farfetch'd.

  Take Farfetch'd back to the trainer and you will receive HM 01 ("Cut"), a skill that can used to cut down small trees while on the map.

  Press "Start" and go to the "Items" menu. Select "HM 01 Cut" and choose the Pokemon you would like to teach it to. Once you choose a Pokemon, press the "A" button to confirm your selection.

  Walk up to the small tree or shrub you would like to cut down and press "A." You will be asked if you would like to cut down the tree. Select "Yes" and press the "A" button to cut down the tree blocking the way.
