How to Tank FF3

A character in a video game that is built for survivability, either through high levels of health points or defense, is known as a "tank." In "Final Fantasy 3" for the Nintendo DS, the Knight class is designed to be the default tanking class. Knights are the upgraded version of the Warrior class, and so are able to equip heavy armor and shields to protect their naturally high health points. But Knights aren't all equipment, they also are capable of casting low-level white magic to cure damage taken, have a powered up guard ability and can protect allies that are near death from physical assaults.

  Obtain the Power of Fire by defeating the Salamander in the Molten Cave near the Dwarven Hollows. This will unlock the Knight class.

  Change any character to a Knight and equip the best armor in your inventory. Return to the home of the Dwarves you will see a cutscene which ends with you being allowed into the Dwarven treasure room. Inside you will find class armor for the jobs that were unlocked by the Fire Crystal, including Knight.

  Check every armor shop when entering a new town for upgraded equipment. Buy the best defensive armor available and equip it on your Knight.

  When in a battle against a powerful enemy, such as a boss, equip a second shield to further boost your defense. Knights are still able to attack even while dual-wielding shields.

  Use the "Defend" ability at the start of every round against a powerful opponent. Defend is an advanced version of the Guard ability available to other jobs, and is capable of greatly reducing the damage taken from physical blows. Defend is the first move used at the start of every round, overcoming the Knight's naturally low speed. Defend also works with a Knight's auto-cover ability, which allows the Knight to jump in front of teammates in critical health (they will be resting on one knee) to absorb attacks directed at them.
