How to Catch Red Gyarados in Pokemon: LeafGreen

The "Pokemon" series of video games features many creatures of various types and abilities. One of the more unusual creatures is the fish Pokemon called Magikarp, which surprises many trainers by evolving into the fearsome Gyarados water dragon. Gyarados is both a Water- and Flying-type Pokemon, and it uses Dragon-type attacks in addition to its normal elemental affinities. Magikarp appear regularly in the fishing areas of "Pokemon: LeafGreen," but lucky players may nab a rare red version of the water dragon.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the fishing areas surrounding the port town of Vermillion City. This area offers the highest chance of encountering Gyarados.

    • 2

Fish with your Super Rod at any of the waterside regions of the town. Activating the item begins the fishing mini-game.

    • 3

Press the "A" button when an exclamation mark appears over your Pokemon trainer's head; your trainer will enter into battle with a Pokemon.

    • 4

Run from the battle if a Pokemon other than a Red Gyarados appears. A Red Gyarados only has a one in 8,192 chance of appearing. Running from other Pokemon will reduce the time it takes to find this rare version of Gyarados.

    • 5

Attack Red Gyarados until its health enters the lower third of the HP bar. The bar will then turn red, indicating that the Pokemon cannot easily resist capture.

    • 6

Throw Poke Balls to capture the Red Gyarados. Red Gyarados has a low catch rate, and you may need to make multiple attempts to capture it before it finally joins your team.
