Differences in the SNES and GBA of Super Mario World

Originally contained with the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), "Super Mario World" introduced many elements that have become staples of the long-running series. When re-released for the Game Boy Advanced (GBA), Nintendo used technological and gameplay changes to update the game. The majority of these changes are small or primarily cosmetic, while others are big versions in terms of how the game is played.
  1. Playing as Mario or Luigi

    • One of the biggest changes to the GBA port of "Super Mario World" is in how the two brothers are played. While Mario is exactly the same as the classic controls, Luigi has been significantly changed. Luigi now uses the floating jump, similar to "Super Mario Bros. 2" and his fireballs bounce higher than Mario's. While riding Yoshi, Luigi can spit out any enemy that is normally swallowed and the enemies roll differently than from Mario. Luigi also gains all the coin from the 10-coin block at once. Lastly, players can switch between the two just by pressing the R-button.

    Number of Hits

    • In the original "Super Mario World," as with other "Super Mario" games, any "super" (big) version of either brother could be hit once before becoming small, which could be hit once before dying. As well, any item held by the character while super would be lost on the hit. In the GBA game port when hit in cape or flower mode the character loses the special power but remains as super and items are only lost if hit while in super. This allows the player to take a maximum or three hits without any power-ups instead of the original two.

    Save Anywhere

    • Since the game is now portable, and therefore can be played during short spurts, the feature has been added to save the game anywhere, even during stages. The game still asks if you wish to save after all the same events as the original, but the option exists at all other times as well.

    Colored Yoshis

    • Once all four of the colored Yoshis (green, red, blue and yellow) are unlocked through gameplay, they will hatch from Yoshi eggs found throughout the world depending on the character's status when he obtains the egg: regular (small) receives a random Yoshi, super gets a yellow, fire gets red and cape gets blue. This only happens once all five have been unlocked. Similarly, the different colored Yoshis offer different power-ups after 10 berries: blue gives a cape, red gives a flower and yellow gives a star.

    Maximum Lives

    • The maximum number of lives a player can have was increased for the GBA game to 999. As well, the one-up sprite now has a maximum of 5-up instead of 3-up.

    Dragon Coins

    • Every level in the game now has a dragon coin to collect. In the case of some castle and subterranean levels, platforms were added to accommodate the added coins, which also made them easier to complete. The game also allows players to return to previous levels after beating the final boss in order to collect every coin.

    Cosmetic Changes

    • Notably, Mario and Luigi now have voices and make specific sounds during different actions. Cut screens have been added and changed within the game as have special graphics after gaining multiple lives through a star or an extended jumping combo. Nintendo also made many changes to sounds of the game.
