How to Cut a Tree Down on Pokemon Sapphire

HM01, the Hidden Machine that is used to teach a Pokemon "Cut," is found early in "Pokemon Sapphire." When a Pokemon learns the move "Cut," it gains the ability to slice down small trees that block your path along certain routes. "Cut" is a Normal-type attack that is learned by a large range of Pokemon. Simply finding HM01 is not enough to be able to use it to chop down trees; you will also need to earn your first Gym Badge.

Instructions

  Enter Cutter's house to the left of the Pokemon Center in Rustboro City. Talk to Cutter, and he will give you HM01 to teach your Pokemon the move "Cut."

  Defeat Roxanne, the Rustboro City Gym Leader, to unlock the ability to use "Cut" to chop down trees. She specializes in Rock-type Pokemon, and her team consists of a Level 14 Geodude and a Level 15 Nosepass.

  Boot up HM01 by selecting it from your item bag. The game will ask whether you want to teach "Cut" to a Pokemon. Select "Yes" and choose a Pokemon on your team that is labeled as "Able" to learn the attack.

  Face a small tree and open your Pokemon menu to select the monster that knows how to use "Cut." Select "Cut" from its menu options, and the Pokemon will remove the tree from your path.
