List of the in-Game Trainers in Pokemon

In all of the "Pokemon" games, you have battles with different types of Pokemon trainers that may result in earning money or prizes. These may include battles against more skilled Team Rocket members, or battles against novice Youngster trainers. You will also battle against gym leaders and the Elite Four, who are expert Pokemon trainers. These battles earn you badges and new abilities.
  1. Kanto Region Trainers - Gym Leaders

    • You face the Kanto gym leaders in "Red," "Blue," "Yellow," "Silver," "Gold," "Crystal," "FireRed" and "LeafGreen." Brock, a rock-type Pokemon specialist, gives out the Boulder Badge. Misty, the water-type Pokemon expert in Cerulean City, gives you the Cascade Badge. Lt. Surge, an electric-type trainer, and Erika of Celadon City, a grass-type trainer, give out the Thunder and Rainbow Badge, respectively. Sabrina handles psychic-type Pokemon and rewards you with the Marsh Badge. Koga, the poison-type gym leader, and Blaine, the fire-type leader, hand out the Soul Badge and Volcano Badge, respectively, after defeat. Giovanni issues the Earth Badge after the defeat of his earth-type Pokemon, allowing you to face the Elite Four. In "Crystal," "Silver" and "Gold," the Soul Badge is given out by Janine instead.

Johto Region Trainers - Gym Leaders in "Ruby" and "Sapphire"

    • Roxanne gives out the Stone Badge after you defeat her rock-type Pokemon, and Brawly awards the Knuckle Badge after his fighting-types are defeated. Earn the Dynamo Badge and Heat Badge from Wattson, an electric-type leader, and Flannery, a fire-type expert, respectively. Norman awards the Balance Badge after you defeat his normal-types, and you can win the Feather badge from Winona's flying-types. Tate and Liza, psychic-type masters, give out the Mind Badge and Wallace awards the Rain Badge for the defeat of his water-types. All eight badges are required to face the Elite Four.

    Gym Leaders of "Emerald"

    • While the lineup of gym leaders in "Emerald" is similar to "Ruby" and "Sapphire," there are differences. After defeating Tate and Eliza, you battle Juan, not Wallace, for the Rain Badge. Wallace is instead one of the Champions you battle after defeating the Elite Four.

Gym Leaders of "HeartGold" and "SoulSilver"

    • In "HeartGold" and "SoulSilver," which are remakes of "Gold" and "Silver," respectively, destroy Falkner's flying-types for the Zephyr Badge, Bugsy's bug-types for the Hive Badge and Whitney's normal-types for the Plain Badge. Morty awards the Fog Badge after defeating his ghost-types, and Chuck gives out the Storm Badge after his fighting-types lose. Defeat Jasmine's steel-types for the Mineral Badge and Pryce's ice-types for the Glacier Badge. Clair, the last gym leaders, has dragon type Pokemon. Defeat her for the Rising Badge.

Gym Leaders in "Pearl," "Platinum" and "Diamond"

    • Roark, Gardenia and Maylene battle using rock-, grass- and fighting-type Pokemon, respectively. Defeat each of them to earn the Coal, Forest and Cobble Badge. Defeat Crasher Wake's water-types for the Fen Badge, and Fantina's ghost-types for the Relic Badge. Topple Byron's steel-types for the Mine Badge and Candice's ice-types for the Icicle Badge. Volkner, the electric-type master, hands out the Beacon Badge when defeated. You need all badges to face the Elite Four.

Gym Leaders in "Black" and "White"

    • Defeat Chili, Cilan and Cress, a team of fire-, grass- and water-type experts, to earn the Trio Badge. Lenora awards the Basic Badge when her normal-types are defeated, and Burgh's bug-types can earn you the Insect Badge. Defeat Elesa's electric-types for the Bolt Badge. Fight Clay's ground-types for the Clay Badge and Skyla's fighting-types for the Jet Badge. Brycen's ice-types earn the Freeze Badge, and Drayden and Iris' dragon-types give out the Legend Badge.
