What Type of Pokemon Is Gyarados?

In the "Pokémon" series of video games, Gyarados is a huge, aggressive creature known for its strength and rampages. Despite looking like a dragon, Gyarados' two Pokémon types do not include the dragon type. Instead, Gyarados is both a water-type and a flying-type Pokemon. A Pokemon's types have a number of consequences in the game, especially in terms of how it duels with other creatures.
  1. Water Type

    • Gyarados' first type -- water -- is hardly surprising, since this Pokémon lives in rivers and in the sea. In some installments of the game series, such as "Pokémon Pearl," Gyarados is caught from bodies of water using a fishing rod. Gyarados also evolves from another water-dwelling Pokémon, Magikarp. Gyarados' water type is shared by several other Pokémon, including the powerful turtle Pokémon Blastoise, as well as Starmie and Vaporeon.

    Flying Type

    • Gyarados is also a flying creature. As a dual-type creature, Gyarados has access to a larger number of type-based advantages than single-type creatures, but it's also vulnerable to a greater number of creature types because it has the weaknesses of two types. Other flying-type Pokémon include one of the first creatures you'll encounter in Pokémon Blue and Pokémon Red, Pidgey, as well as Combee, Salamence and Fearow.

    Type Strengths and Weaknesses

    • All Pokémon types are effective when combating certain creature types, and they're also vulnerable against other types. As a water-type creature, Gyarados excels when fighting fire-, rock- and ground-type enemies. It deals double damage with its attacks against these types. Gyarados' flying type means that it's also excellent when facing off against bug Pokémon. However, Gyarados' types count against it when it duels against water-, dragon- and grass-type Pokémon; it deals less damage to these creatures. A Gyarados' worst fear is electric-type Pokémon; electric creatures deal lots of damage to Gyarados because of its dual water and flying types.

    Moves

    • The moves Gyarados can learn depend on which Pokémon game is being played. In installments such as "Pokémon Yellow,", Gyarados can't actually learn flying moves, but a Gyarados user does have quite a few other options. For example, a Gyarados can be taught moves such as Blizzard and Thunder, which aren't water- or flying-type attacks. Players using Gyarados should also consider attacks such as Surf, one of the series' best water-based attacks.
