Starting Moves
Unlike most Pokemon, there is absolutely no variance to Zapdos' starting moves. It always starts at Level 50 with Peck and Thundershock. Peck is a Flying-type attack with an attack power of 35. The attack power is one of the main factors for determining the amount of damage an attack does. Thundershock is an Electric-type attack with an attack power of 40. In addition, Thundershock has a 10 percent chance of paralyzing its target when used. The paralysis status ailment reduces the speed of a Pokemon by 25 percent and causes a 25 percent chance to be fully paralyzed each round. This results in the paralyzed Pokemon being unable to attack at all. Both Peck and Thundershock have an accuracy rating of 100. This means these attacks are guaranteed to hit unless your opponent uses a move that decreases the accuracy of Zapdos or raises his evasion.
Additional Attack Moves
Zapdos learns two additional attacks as it increases in level. Drill Peck is a more powerful Flying attack with an attack power of 80. Drill Peck also has a 100 accuracy rating, allowing it to be just as accurate as Peck. Thunder is an upgraded version of Thundershock. Thunder has an attack power of 120 and the chance of inflicting paralysis is increased to 30 percent. The downside to Thunder is that it has a reduced accuracy rating of 70. Without any accuracy or evasion modifying moves being used, Thunder can still miss, unlike all three other attack moves Zapdos learns.
Offensive Augmentation Moves
Some of the moves Zapdos learns improve his abilities to attack his opponent. Agility increases the speed of Zapdos when used. Speed determines which Pokemon attacks first each round. This move is useful to boost your speed when fighting inherently faster opponents. Charge doubles the damage of the next Electric attack move used by Zapdos. This is not a useful bonus move in most situations because using two Electric attack moves is just as effective as using Charge, then using an Electric attack move doing double damage. The version of Charge used in "Pokemon: LeafGreen" does not boost special defense. This change to how Charge works only applies to games that came out after 2006.
Defensive Augmentation Moves
Detect is one of the defensive moves Zapdos learns. This allows it to automatically evade the next attack made by the opponent. However, Detect is only 50 percent effective the next round after it is successfully used; using it every round is not a viable strategy. Light Screen lowers the special attack stat of your opponent when used. This reduces the damage that Pokemon can cause when using a move marked as "Special." This has no effect on the damage of any move marked as "Physical."
