In the 1980s, the manga "Dragon Ball" was first published in Japan. Its popularity spawned an animated television program that started in Japan in 1989. The first Dragon Ball program consisted of 153 episodes and was popular enough that the makers of the series, Funimation, created a sequel series called Dragon Ball Z. Dragon Ball Z made its way to America in 1996 and is still shown today. Its over-the-top fighting sequences make for excellent video game fodder, and many games have been based on the series.
