The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening Cheats for Killing the Sleeping Walrus

The "Legend of Zelda" is a series of action adventure video games produced and developed by Nintendo. Players take on the role of Link, the Hero of Time, as he battles the evil sorcerer Gannondorf. The gameplay in Zelda games is often puzzle-oriented, requiring clever thinking to pass through strange obstacles. In "The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" players must find a way to pass a sleeping walrus that blocks an important path.
  1. Controls and Basic Information

    • "The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" features a simplistic and straightforward control scheme that is easy to master. Use the "Start" button to bring up the in-game menu. This menu features your weapons, inventory and useful metrics for gauging your progress. Use the inventory menu to assign items to your "A" and "B" buttons. Throughout the game, Link discovers many helpful weapons and items that can be used to vanquish foes and interact with the world map. Players can have any two items equipped at the same time. The "Select" button brings up the world map, which is very useful for navigating through the expansive world. The directional pad is used for movement as well as navigation of menus.

    Animal Village

    • Your first encounter with the sleeping walrus occurs on the outskirts of Animal Village, after finishing the third dungeon. Animal Village is located in the middle of "Koholint Island" and is inhabited entirely by talking animals. Many of the townspeople speak in cryptic riddles, and it can be difficult to determine what needs to be done to make your way through the village as a result. Enter the building in the southwestern corner of the village to speak with Chef Bear, one of the few compliant townsfolk. Chef Bear will explain that a sleeping walrus has blocked off one of the main paths leading out of the village, and that nothing can be done to wake him. You cannot attempt to wake the walrus before speaking with Chef Bear, so be sure to stop by his building before leaving the village.

    Waking the Walrus

    • Head to the southeastern exit of Animal Village to encounter the sleeping walrus directly. Any attempt to speak with the walrus will be met with snoring. Once you've examined the walrus, you can return to the town to speak with the villagers about the walrus. Some of them will provide vague clues about a magical song being able to wake the beast. You'll need to enlist the help of the harpist Marin to be rid of the walrus. Marin can be found along the Toronbo Shores, directly south of Mabe Village. Locate Marin along the shoreline and speak with her. She will automatically join you, following directly behind you until your reach the walrus. With Marin in tow, speak to the Walrus a second time to start a cinematic sequence. Marin will play "The Ballad of the Windfish" which removes the walrus from his slumber. After the sequence is finished, the walrus will run back to the village and you will be free to continue on your way.

    Cheating Your Way Through

    • You can also exploit a simple glitch in the game's map system to completely sidestep the walrus. The world map in "The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" is composed of hundreds of squares that represent a single patch of land within the world. Whenever Link moves from one square of the map to the next, there is a short loading period. If the player opens the world map by pressing "Select" at the exact moment that the loading period occurs, Link will be shot forward to the next square of the map. This glitch can allow you to simply pass over the section of the map featuring the walrus. From there, you can move on to the fourth dungeon without needing to spend any time backtracking to Mabe Village.
